Reading a usage licence

Media, territory and duration: the three questions that decide what a commission costs, and why the day rate is only part of it.

Our estimates separate the creative fee — the days we spend making the photographs — from the licence to use them. The licence is priced on three questions.

Where will the images appear?

Your own website and channels cost least. Packaging and out-of-home cost most, because one photograph does the work of a whole campaign there.

Where in the world?

A metro area, the country, North America or everywhere. Online use is priced by where it is aimed, not by where it can be seen.

For how long?

One, two or three years, or without a time limit. Extending later is always possible and usually costs less than buying the longer term you might not need.
